Never Buy Wrong Paper Cups! All Coatings Compared for Hot & Cold Drinks

August 31, 2026

The key difference lies entirely in the cup coating material! Today we break down the differences between PLA, water-based coating, HDPE, LDPE, and MDPE once and for all, so you will never buy the wrong cups again.

First, let’s talk about the two eco-friendly plastic-free coatings, the mainstream premium choices on the market.

PLA coating is made from fermented plant starch and is a fully biodegradable biomaterial. It is non-toxic, odorless, heat-resistant, and 100% degradable, stable and safe for hot water, hot coffee and other hot drinks. The only downside is the higher cost, which makes it the top choice for high-end milk tea cups and standard eco-friendly paper cups.

Water-based coating is the best cost-effective option for family daily use. With no plastic lamination at all, it is safe, odorless and easy to degrade. Its heat resistance fully meets daily needs for hot water and warm drinks, featuring affordable price, balanced safety and practicality.

Next, let’s clarify the three most confusing PE plastic coatings. All of them are polyethylene, and their performance varies greatly simply due to different densities!

LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene) is the traditional plastic coating for ordinary paper cups. It has good waterproof performance but very poor heat resistance. It will soften and deform when the water temperature exceeds 80°C. It is only suitable for cold water and cold drinks instead of boiling water, and it is non-degradable with poor environmental performance.

HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) is the premium grade among all PE materials. It features high density, high hardness, excellent heat resistance and deformation resistance, as well as great leakage-proof performance. It is the dedicated material for thickened high-temperature resistant commercial paper cups with higher safety and stability, yet it cannot be degraded.

MDPE (Medium-Density Polyethylene) sits right between LDPE and HDPE. It has great toughness, tensile resistance and crack resistance with good wear and leakage resistance. It works for both cold and hot daily drinks, but has no outstanding advantages, serving as a general-purpose moderate material.

Finally, save this universal purchasing rule for perfect choices every time!

Choose PLA for high-end eco-friendly hot drink use;

Choose water-based coating for cost-effective family daily use;

Choose HDPE for heat-resistant and durable commercial use;

Choose LDPE for temporary cold drink use;

Choose MDPE for daily wear-resistant general use!
